Course Description

Learning Area Leader: Mrs M. Millar, Mr R. Ferguson.

This is a practical art making course within the Visual Arts field of Design. Through self directed anaylsis of design artworks learners will unpack modern and contemporary artworks to create their own body of design works based around learner lead design problems. The design works are presented in a designer's workbook and portfolio presentation of finished works. 


Skills/content you will cover in this course 

  • How to see and think about the world like an artist

  • How to create a body of artwork like a design artist

  • A deeper understanding of design methods, techniques

  • Understanding and application of modern design conventions

  •  Use of industry standard software, Adobe Bridge, Photoshop and Illustrator

  • Contemporary design art practices through class lead discussions and individual mentoring.


Skills you need to be successful in this course - Be curious, bring a good work ethic, be open to constructive feedback and willing to try new things, learn from mistakes and be able to work independently. Good time management skills are essential.

This course is useful for or will lead to - this course will lead a tertiary pathway in the fine art or creative industries leading to a career or work as a graphic designer, commercial artist, web developer/designer, in the film or game industries. Learning to look, think and create like an artist leads to a unique set of analysis and problem solving skills that sought-after in the modern work place. 

Recommended Prior Learning

Learning within senior levels of 1 & 2 of the Visual Arts would be an advantage with level 2 preferred. Consultation with Learning Area Leader would be required if the above courses haven not been undertaken.

Additional Course Specific Contributions & Equipment/Stationery

An art kit is a compulsory part of this course and will be charged to learner accounts. This will be approximately $35.

Optional Items - Recommended for home purchase and use
● A laptop that is capable of running current Adobe Creative Cloud software would be beneficial.
● Adobe Creative Cloud software is available to purchase from the school for $10.00 for students enrolled in this course.
