3 Practical Chemistry

Course Description

Learning Area Leader: Ms C. Green.

Learners will explore how the material world operates. The course will cover a variety of aspects of chemistry and how it can be applied in real world scenarios, including understanding of organic chemistry and spectroscopic data, properties and thermodynamics, and oxidation/reduction reactions and quantitative analysis. We will look at the factors which cause and impact chemical reactions through theoretical knowledge and practical investigations.

Skills/content you will cover in this course

  • Oxidation and reduction

  • Spectroscopy techniques

  • Quantitative analysis

  • Thermochemistry.

Skills you need to be successful in this course - Working collaboratively, ability to work safely in the lab and carry out practical work. Written reports and Scientific writing. Time management and independent study skills.  Ability to receive feedback and apply it.

This course is useful for or will lead to - this course is for students wanting to move into a pathway with Chemistry, Sciences, Engineering, or Health Sciences at university.
