3 Food Product Design: Hangarau Kai

Course Description

Students will research and critically evaluate the impact of agriculture on health and well-being, weighing pros and cons. From this they will develop a plant-based protein product targeting teens to encourage dietary change. Additionally, they'll explore the complex procedures of dessert making, as well as planning and creating a Food Truck menu. This is a theory rich achievement standards course with kitchen practicals to supplement learning.


Skills/content you will cover in this course 

  • Think critically and evaluate problems

  • Use the follow the design process from idea generation to launch

  • Understanding of plant based meat alternatives

  • Develop and create a menu for a food truck

  • Choux pastry and praline.


Skills you need to be successful in this course - excellent time management skills, be open to critically thinking, a high level of literacy is required as students are required to complete a number of research and report writing tasks. 

This course is useful for or will lead to - this course can lead to tertiary study in Food Technology, Engineering, Food science, Cookery or Health Science. 


**Please note that learners can only take 3KAI or 3HOSP - they cannot take both**

Recommended Prior Learning

Having taken 2KAI or 2HOSP is advantageous, but not essential.
