Course Description

Learning Area Leader: Mrs M. Millar.

Learners will develop practical art making skills within the field of photography through theoretical and practical unpacking of photographic conventions from still life photography. Artwork created by this process will be presented in a photographic artist workbook and photographic portfolio of finished works. 


Skills/content you will cover in this course 

  • How to see and think about the world like an artist

  • How to create a body of artwork like a designer

  • An understanding of different photographic methods, techniques and conventions through practical application and analysis.


Skills you need to be successful in this course - Be curious! - Bring a work ethic. - Be open to constructive feedback and willing to try it. - Be willing to learn from your mistakes. - Good time management skills. 

This course is useful for or will lead to - This course will lead to a level 3 art course and a tertiary pathway in photography/design or the creative industries leading to a career or work as an artist, photographer, graphic designer, art curator, community arts coordinator, web developer/designer, in the film or game industries. Learning to look, think and create like an artist leads to a unique set of analysis and problem solving skills that is sought-after in the modern work place. 



Recommended Prior Learning

Learning within senior level 1 or junior photography/photo design of the Visual Arts would be an advantage. Consultation with Learning area leader would be required if the above courses haven't been undertaken.

Additional Course Specific Contributions & Equipment/Stationery

Course-related Art Kits are required in this course and will be purchased by the school and charged to learner accounts. This will be approximately $35.

Optional Items - Recommended for home purchase and use
Students would benefit from having their own DSLR camera, camera bag and SD card for external folio work (Learners choosing photography would benefit from their own DSLR Camera with or approx specs of ISO Sensitivity ... Auto, 100 to 25600, Shutter ... 30 to 1/4000 Second, Aperture ... Maximum: f/3.5 - 5.6 Minimum: f/22 - 38.) * There are limited school cameras available for learner use.
A laptop that is capable of running current Adobe Creative Cloud software would be beneficial.
Adobe Creative Cloud software is available to purchase from the school $10.00 for students enrolled in this course.
