Course Description

The Level 1 Outdoor Education course offers an introduction to technical outdoor skills and an appreciation of the Māori perspective on the natural world, focusing on the interconnection between all elements in nature.
Skills/content you will cover in this course
Technical skills in mountain biking, rock climbing, and tramping
Understanding the Māori perspective on the natural world
Weather, navigation, trip planning and preparation, tramping experiences and overnight camps
Learning about local iwi's significant places and history.
Skills you need to be successful in this course - basic interest in outdoor activities, willingness to learn and participate in mountain biking, rock climbing, and tramping, basic physical fitness, teamwork, resilience, and a positive attitude towards new challenges in the outdoor environment.
This course is useful for or will lead to - developing foundational outdoor skills, enhancing understanding of Māori perspectives, preparing for advanced outdoor education courses, and providing a base for future careers in guiding, environmental stewardship, DOC roles, outdoor instructing, and environmental science.
Additional Course Specific Contributions & Equipment/Stationery
This course includes a range of Field Trips and Outdoor Activities at a cost of $350.00 to meet the requirements of the assessment standards. * Course cost to be added to statements at the start of course. The course contributions help to cover transport, activity fees, safety and rock-climbing gear.
Learners will be expected to assist with and supply their own property (suitable personal clothing, footwear for tramping, helmet and water bottle) for overnight and day trip excursions.
Learners will also need to provide your own serviced mountain bike and helmet that is fit for purpose.
