Course Description

Teacher in Charge: Mr R. McBrearty.

Are you ready to explore the fascinating world of geography? In this course, we will journey through some of New Zealand's most awe-inspiring landscapes and delve into topics ranging from alpine environments to urban planning.   We will investigate the wider environment of Canterbury, including the geology, climate, and flora and fauna of this dynamic environment. We will also take a closer look at the Selwyn River and investigate the human impact on its fragile ecosystem. From there, we will explore Te Waihora/Lake Ellesmere, an area of great significance to Selwyn.

Looking further afield, we will investigate the South Island High Country and Glentanner Station, as well as the iconic Castle Hill, and evaluate the impact of human settlement on these unique landscapes. We will also examine the topic of coastal erosion and sea level rise, and explore how we can plan for and mitigate the effects of extreme events such as floods and earthquakes. Moving on from the natural environment, we will explore the built environment and consider the importance of urban planning. Looking towards the future, we will investigate the challenges and opportunities of sustainable living, population demographics, and future development. We will compare this to global studies and investigate other growing populations and megacities.

Throughout this course, you will gain a deep understanding of the natural and built environments, the relationship between them, and the importance of sustainability & kaitiakitanga.

Join us on this exciting journey!!
