1 Who Do You Think You Are (1WHO2)

Course Description

What is your whakapapa? What is your story?


This course looks at your own history and tells the story of your tipuna/ancestors, and which local, national and global events they might have been involved in, whilst learning about the big events that shaped us as New Zealanders.


Doing some historical detective work, you will find the answers to questions like: Did they arrive with the early British settlers or were they Tangata Whenua? Did they go to war, or were they, pacifist? Did they protest the Springbok Tour, or did they support the national game? 


What side of historical events were your whānau on and what different perspectives did people have on these events?

Voluntary Course Contribution
Course Fee $5.00 for in-class materials and resources.
Possible Field Trip opportunity to deepen and reinforce learning at an approximate cost of between $15 to $35 covering travel expenses and entry fee. * to be confirmed during the course depending on available exhibitions and events and added to statements as they occur. Possible trip locations could include Riccarton House, Canterbury Museum, Kaiapoi Pa, Air force Museum, Selwyn Heritage park/ Bridlepath

Optional Items - Recommended for home purchase and use
Dedicated learner laptop (Chrome book suitable) with learners own headset recommended.

To keep costs low, we recommend only buying the items of stationery you do not have. Your child is welcome to bring items from home, perhaps purchased in previous years and repurposed to save money. This could include erasers, headphones, scientific calculators and padlocks for the lockers if they already have one.
