1 English - Mind-control and manipulation

Course Description

Conspiracies. Colonisation. Coca-cola capitalism. In this course, learners will discover the power of language to control, persuade, influence and manipulate. They will explore how and why power and language go hand-in-hand, and understand what drives some of us down rabbit holes of misinformation. By the end of the course, learners will have a new appreciation of the language techniques that compel us to act in ways we normally would not, as well as how language can be a tool for both good and evil. They will apply their knowledge of language when writing their own persuasive texts and sitting an external examination.

Internally learners will analyse the language used in different speeches as well as critically analyse written and verbal text.  Their external is the creation of a portfolio of writing.  By completing these assessments learners will achieve their NCEA literacy requirement.

This course is for learners who want to continue to develop their English skills with the possibility of further study.

Learners can only take ONE English course.
